How did you find out about Outreach360?
I found out about Outreach360 through my friends at school. They approached me one day and told me to come on this trip with them to teach children in the Dominican Republic. I immediately said yes.
What were your concerns (if any) before coming? And how did you overcome them?
I am a nervous traveler. Planes, airports, new environments scare me; I think having my friends on this trip helped a lot. They help me get out of my comfort zone and encourage me to do things I normally wouldn’t do. Also, my group had frequent meetings beforehand to become familiar with the culture in the DR.
What has been a highlight of this experience?
The highlight was definitely meeting and teaching the children. I loved singing songs with them and playing in the park. I have never felt so loved by a group of kids. Even though it was tough to teach them and get them to understand English sometimes, when they finally understood it was a very rewarding experience. It broke my heart to leave them. I hope one day I can come back and teach them again.
What has been your favorite principle?
My favorite principle was “be flexible and creative.” There was one incident when my teaching group had lost all of their lesson planning papers. As I frantically tried to find the sheets, one of my group members pulled me aside and said, “Its ok. We probably left them in the classroom.” When we got to the school, they were in the classroom. This experience taught me to be flexible and not freak out when something doesn’t go your way but to be creative and improvise.
What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering with Outreach360?
It’s a new place, a new environment. There are new people. So jump right in with an open mind. Be willing to be flexible, and go in with a positive attitude.
